Dr Laurel McEwen is an American anthropologist based in Paris, France with a doctorate in Social Anthropology and Ethnography from the School of High Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS).
Specializing in medical anthropology, her research focuses on the ontology and epistemology of science and the contemporary and ancestral practices of medicine and healing. Her first book, “Multidimensional Consciousness: An Anthropocosmic Perspective” examines consciousness from a holistic perspective that brings together the physical, social, and metaphysical dimensions of experiences in consciousness. It is the fruit of ten years of participant observation of various practies in complementary and alternative medicine in Western Europe.
In addition, she is currently working as a consultant on various projects in conjunction with the Association Oncodefi in Montpellier, France that aim to improve cancer treatment for mentally handicapped patients, to improve cancer education for professionals who accompany these patients, and to raise awareness on the importance of cancer screening in this patient population. She also works with Corinne Dechelette on a dermatological project about our perception of our skin and its virtual reality as an organ with considerable social significance.
